Globus Toolkit Tutorial The Globus Consortium

Welcome to the Globus Consortium Globus Toolkit Compute Grid Tutorial.

The purpose of this tutorial is a step-by-step instructional build of a three node grid and the deployment of an application on that grid. We are setting up our three node grid so that it will appear like a grid client (NodeA) connecting to a grid that appears as a "cluster" of Torque (PBS) job managed machines represented by NodeB and a "cluster" of Sun Grid Engine (SGE) job managed machines represented by NodeC. The Globus toolkit will be configured to use either of these "clusters" to offload process intensive jobs to, to expedite completion of a task and show a direct benefit of a compute grid.

This tutorial requires a rudimentary knowledge of Linux and administration of Linux systems, networking, and basic programming principles. Chances are, if you've come across this tutorial you do indeed have that skill set.

Throughout this tutorial we use the specific styles seen below to signify certain types of actions or extra information.

This style is used for extra tips or helpful information for the user.

This style is used for giving the user specific important warnings.

This style is used for separating out specific directions that the user will be following.

Green text will be used for the text that the machine displays.

Red text will be used for actual command line entries that the user inputs.

Blue text will be used for text that will be edited within a file.

So grab some spare machines and lets build a grid!
