Letter From the President

Late last month an important milestone was reached for the Globus Toolkit, it turned ten years old. As I have only been involved with Globus myself for just under four years, I'm using this issue to talk about the future of the Globus Toolkit as opposed to reminiscing about the past decade. Besides, there will be plenty of time for the latter at the Globus 10th Birthday party!

We are all well aware of the major components of the Globus Toolkit. They have all been covered in the pages of this journal in one form or another. But what does it take to become part of the fold? How do components become part of the Globus Toolkit? In this issue of the Globus Consortium Journal we discuss the Globus Incubator Management Project itself, it's history and the process by which a new component germinates into part of the Globus garden. We also feature three of these incubator projects. GridShib for Grid identity management, The Metrics Project to gain statistical insight into the usage of the Globus Toolkit. And GridWay, a meta-scheduler for Globus grids.

To really gain insight into the future of the Globus Toolkit and anything else Globus for that matter, be sure to attend Globus GlobusWORLD / GridWorld this month. If you are not yet registered consider this a personal invitation!

A bit repetitive, but since I'm pretty proud of this tutorial I believe this bears repeating... For those interested in dipping their toes in the "Globus pool" but are unsure about where to start, the Globus Consortium has created a step by step self paced Globus Toolkit Compute Grid Tutorial. It is available on the Globus Consortium web site at: http://www.globusconsortium.org/tutorial/
